Live With Animals presents How Is My Friend an impromtu exhibition by Karisa Senavitis & Kevin O’Neill, collectively known as Will Work for Good. Senavitis and O’Neill present naively constructed symbols of solidarity (flags, posters, lapel pins, t-shirts, etc.) representing what they perceive as the good spirit and exuberance of local Haitian culture channeled through the positive vibes of a long-time Haitian friend who has been too-long out of communication.

The work makes no attempt to be an historical account of Haiti and chooses to make no overt comment or reference to the current tragedy. Rather, the perspective is more local/personal, expressed through recontextualized communications and unassuming visual cues adapted from emails, flyers, dvd packaging, television, logos and other typically mundane communications. The resulting work intends to send positive vibes back to the Haitian community and more specifically, to evoke a return email/visit/phone call from this good friend who is believed to be in Brooklyn.

There will be an Opening Reception on March 5 from 7pm to 10pm. Additional events during the month will be posted online at livewithanimals.org. A portion of proceeds from the sale of work will go to the Haitian Centers Council in Brooklyn to provide therapy and legal support to New York’s Haitians impacted by the earthquake.

Hmmmm. So in some ways this is a PRE-WWFG project and kind of the first project we ever worked on together. This is a pretty basic cd package for an audio re-enactment of the Haitian Revolution (possibly the only audio re-enactment in existence). The recording was made in the 70s by our friend Rodrigue Cole and his colleagues in Haiti. This was originally produced to be aired on Haitian radio but about 30 years later Rod felt it still had relevance and should be put to CD and distributed throughout Haitian communities. So about 7 years ago we agreed to do a drawing/painting of an historic Haitian battle scene featuring Capois La Mort. The image was completed over the course of two months. Project died. Rod moved his radio program from NJ to Brooklyn and five years later re-emerged, ready to make the CD again. One year later we received the content and the CD was designed. 6 months later the CD was put into production. 2 weeks ago we received a copy. It’s all Haitian/French so we can’t quite understand the dialogue. The package features portraits of all 16 of the actors. The quality is pretty poor. In some cases the photo on the package is the only photo ever taken of the actor. Beneath the CD are ads for a doctor, a driving school, a church, etc. Reminds us of older Jamaican records with ads on the back for local car washes. Anyway, you would think that having 7 years to complete a project the final design would be epic. Instead this is a pretty humble offering but we were super happy to be part of this.
