An exhibition by Karisa Senavitis & Kevin O’Neill
March 5th to 28th, 2010
Opening Reception Friday, March 5th 7pm to 10pm
Live With Animals 210 Kent Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11211

Live With Animals presents How Is My Friend an impromtu exhibition by Karisa Senavitis & Kevin O’Neill, collectively known as Will Work for Good. Senavitis and O’Neill present naively constructed symbols of solidarity (flags, posters, lapel pins, t-shirts, etc.) representing what they perceive as the good spirit and exuberance of local Haitian culture channeled through the positive vibes of a long-time Haitian friend who has been too-long out of communication.

The work makes no attempt to be an historical account of Haiti and chooses to make no overt comment or reference to the current tragedy. Rather, the perspective is more local/personal, expressed through recontextualized communications and unassuming visual cues adapted from emails, flyers, dvd packaging, television, logos and other typically mundane communications. The resulting work intends to send positive vibes back to the Haitian community and more specifically, to evoke a return email/visit/phone call from this good friend who is believed to be in Brooklyn.

There will be an Opening Reception on March 5 from 7pm to 10pm. Additional events during the month will be posted online at livewithanimals.org. A portion of proceeds from the sale of work will go to the Haitian Centers Council in Brooklyn to provide therapy and legal support to New York’s Haitians impacted by the earthquake.

Live With Animals
210 Kent Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11211
Open Saturday and Sunday 2pm to 7pm or by appointment

This is a piece for an exhibition called NSEW on cartographic, geographically-oriented and explorer-bound art. The show was curated by friend/artist Fleming Jeffries for her gallery Picaroon Projects in The Plains VA. We found a salvaged lighted sign cabinet and applied our message “TELL ME WHAT TO DO” with custom adhesive vinyl lettering. While most pedestrian signage identifies place, gives direction and discourages getting lost, this sign puts you at a loss and begins a dialogue/exploration.

For over a year Meet Your Printmaker has been compiling a directory of independent print/printmaking studios around the world through its blog. Meet Your Printmaker shifts the emphasis away from the artist and presents the printers/printmakers as a unique workforce … the groups and individuals who uphold and evolve new and traditional printing techniques, whether in the form of commercial work, artist editions or retail products and who share their skills and educate their respective communities. We curated this exhibition — a selection of printed matter from 40 studios around the world that have been featured on the MYP blog — at Washington Printmakers Gallery in Washington DC. For more info on the studios featured in the exhibition, visit Meet Your Printmaker.

We were asked by our friend Jasmine Pasquill to take part in a small drawing exhibition at a new gallery in Portland Oregon called Igloo. At the time we were really intrigued by appatizer names at chain restaurants, particularly TGI Friday’s Wicked Wings and Chili’s Awesome Blossom (being vegetarians we could only consume the latter). The names seemed almost Native American like Red cloud or Wild Dove and it was funny to experience that connection within the walls of something so unfortunately American like Friday’s or Chili’s. We decided to honor these names coming from a similar place of bewilderment. We created a typeface inspired by Navajo patterns and created a reflective treatment to express the feeling of expansion in each name. Both drawings were 3ft. x 3ft. and tackily executed with Sharpies on dry-erase board.
